When I first started posting on Instagram, I did what most people do. I looked around, tried to reverse engineer what worked, and thought the quickest way to grow was to comment on other people’s content.
I reposted trending clips and added my thoughts.
I tried curating interesting facts and insights from around the world.
I even experimented with finding “popular posts” and giving my two cents.
It felt logical at the time. Everyone says content is about volume, momentum and playing the algorithm. So I played the game. I tried to be clever, fast and consistent.
But the truth is simple. None of it worked as well as I hoped.
What did work
It took years to figure this out. Not weeks. Not months. Years of posting, testing and finding my footing. The moment things started to shift was the moment I stopped trying to sound like everyone else.
I shared my own experience.
I shared real client stories.
I talked openly about the currency mistakes players make.
I broke down deals.
I spoke about the lessons that shaped me.
I showed people how I think.
That is when my content started performing. That is when the right people began paying attention. Not because I had the flashiest post. Not because I followed trends. But because I was speaking from inside my world, not someone else’s.
Why your own voice wins
People follow people. They want context, credibility and honesty. They want the story behind the advice. They want to understand how you see things and why you see them that way. When you share that, you build trust. Real trust. The kind that compounds over time and leads to conversations, clients and long term relationships.
My voice became my advantage.
My stories created connection.
My experience became the value.
My honesty made the brand stronger.
Other people’s content might get attention.
Your own content gets loyalty.
What I know now
If you are building anything. A business, a brand, a newsletter, a reputation. Do not hide behind other people’s work. Do not try to impress the algorithm. Do not assume that more noise equals more growth.
Your lived experience is the asset.
Your perspective is rare.
Your stories are what cut through.
It took me years to see it clearly, but I am glad I did. The further I lean into my own voice, the more the right people find their way to me.
And that is the whole point of this journey. Not to be popular. To be valuable.
